Corporate blogging and content management specialists iUpload have announced a new initiative to promote advertising within RSS news feeds and blogs.

Under a new partnership with Pheedo, the blog and RSS advertising firm, iUpload's clients can serve text ads within the header of their RSS news feeds, within a blog post or as a standalone blog post. Advertisers can pay either by every click, sale, or per thousand views.

Syndicated news has traditionally been a solid revenue stream for news organisations, and as RSS feeds have grown in popularity publishers have become increasingly keen to generate income from them.

Publishers have focused on building their RSS audience, but iUpload has seen an increase in demand for more detailed user statistics and advertising options over the past three months.

"RSS has a better return on investment over email," said Renee Blodgett, spokesperson for iUpload.

"SPAM and filters at all levels along the email delivery chain have hurt publishers, because their legitimate opt-in email is not getting through. RSS provides a direct pipe to the customer."

Recent research by the Pew Internet & American Life Project found that around five per cent of US web users are using RSS - a valuable audience of tech-savvy, professionals.

"This segment of the audience can be hard to reach through email, so RSS is providing advertisers an effective alternative," said Ms Blodgett.
