As a result of the new arrangement, openDemocracy will make use of the Demotix Widget on its site and use images from Demotix for their stories.
"We're rebuilding the media, piece by piece - Demotix's citizen journalist collective and openDemocracy's open-source analysis and commentary will bring new media and new models into a mixture of text and picture that is not just a replacement, but better than what came before," Tony Curzon Price, openDemocracy editor-in-chief said, in the announcement on the Demotix site.
The relationship is 'perfect synergy,' Demotix said, in the announcement. "On the one hand, oD's razor-sharp, individual textual analysis, and on the other, Demotix's collective, collaborative visual representation of the world. Opposites attract."
Demotix, which launched in September 2008, allows users to upload news videos and images which are then sold to more mainstream media outlets, with 70 per cent of any fee charged given back to the amateur or professional photographer or filmmaker.
Responding to one user's query about the new arrangement, Demotix CEO Turi Munthe confirmed that openDemocracy 'can't re-licence any Demotix material without pre-negotiating payment terms with us'.
