A survey of Irish web surfers has found that less than 20 per cent would be prepared to pay for news or sport online.

The study, by advertising agency Ican, showed that only 18 per cent were prepared to pay for news, 13 per cent for sport and only 10 per cent for news archives.

However, more than 50 per cent said they would pay for unique offerings such as career services.
