Police are investigating a website that claims to supply membership and press cards for the UK's National Union of Journalists at a cost of at least £275.

ptClub.com advertises 'exclusive' membership to the NUJ and a both a UK and international press card. The site also claims to provide alternative identities, anonymous banking and casino licences.

"A press card will get you the best seats, often for free, at restaurants, sporting and social events, and you will usually be traded up to first class on flights," claims the site.

"This is the Real McCoy and the cost reflects it."

Genuine NUJ press cards are only available by applying directly to the union.

"You are perpetrating a fraud and we require you to remove this material at once," said Tim Gopsill, the union's press card representative, in an email to the site and its host Verio.

"Membership is only open to bona fide journalists who demonstrate their standing through examples of their work and proof of earnings."
