Redhotcurry.com founder scoops top media woman awardRedhotcurry.com founder Lopa Patel has outshone women at the BBC, Channel 4 and the Sun to be named media professional Asian woman of the year.

Ms Patel founded Redhotcurry.com in 2001, which claims to be the only female-owned and self-funded Asian website in the UK.

From its humble beginnings as a cookery site, Rethotcurry.com has grown into a lifestyle portal providing news, opinion and entertainment for Britain's Asian community and attracts 40,000 visitors each month.

Ms Patel was presented with her award at the Asian Women of Achievement ceremony at London's Hilton hotel on 26 May.

"The Award recognises the important role that the UK's 2.3 million South Asians play in the wealth, stability and culture of modern Britain and, more importantly, how technology can be used to unite this ethnic community," said Ms Patel.

Other media professionals shortlisted for the prize included Ruhi Hamid, director of foreign current affairs for the BBC, Navdip Raman, commissioning editor for factual entertainment at Channel 4, BBC World Asia editor Rita Payne and Anila Baig, the first Muslim columnist for the Sun.
