Russian news agency RIA Novosti has announced plans for a new sports news agency scheduled for launch in October.

The new specialist agency will be led by Dmitry Tugarin, former adviser to the chief of the Russian federal agency for sport and physical education, a release from RIA Novosti says.

The outlet will offer multimedia content and will take on new journalists in addition to staff working on RIA Novosti's existing sport and audio and visual desks.

The decision to launch the new business was prompted by recent international sport events and a growing demand for sports news in Russia and abroad, according to RIA Novosti deputy editor-in-chief Maxim Filimonov.

RIA Novosti currently publishes news in 14 languages. The agency has a dedicated infographics channel and has recently pushed for more user-generated content with the launch of new site and an awards scheme for contributors.
