The Daily Telegraph, Mail, Guardian, Times, Sunday Times and i are the six titles shortlisted for newspaper of the year at the Press Awards, organisers announced today.

Nominations for the team awards, scoop of the year and best front page have also been unveiled.

The front page category includes two splashes relating to last summer's riots - the Telegraph's "Rule of the mob" and the Independent's similar "Mob rule". The Guardian front page on "The scandal that closed the News of the World" is also shortlisted.

The winners will be announced at a ceremony in London on 20 March.

Chairman of the judges Bob Satchwell said in a release: "Those who dismiss 2011 as less than a good year for the newspaper industry should take heed of the awards judges.

"They know from hours of reading and deliberations over entries that British national newspaper readers are still served by the world's most vibrant and diverse press.

"Despite unprecedented attention and negative comment the papers and their journalists produced many terrific stories that informed and entertained, playing a vital role in our democracy.

"Panels of independent judges and those nominated by their newspapers have pored over more than 650 entries to produce the shortlists. They have had the privilege of seeing and reading a mountain of brilliant journalism."
