One third of UK homes will be subscribed to broadband internet services by the end of 2005, according to new research by Telecom Markets.

More than five million people in the UK now subscribe to broadband internet services said the report, and more than 50,000 new subscribers sign up for broadband internet services every week.

Increased competition is likely to lower prices further and encourage more web users to take up the faster, always-on broadband services, although BT still dominates with a 40 per cent share of the market.

Speaking to the 2004 Labour Party conference today, prime minister Tony Blair pledged that by 2005, broadband technology "will be available to every home in Britain that wants it".
