Broadband internet has opened a new era of content delivery and will enable media organisations to involve audiences more directly than ever before, according to Ashley Highfield, director of new media at the BBC.

Speaking at the Broadband Britain Summit in Westminster on 28 October, Mr Highfield said that the BBC sees broadband as a way of encouraging participation and increasing choice for audiences.

"It will open up new ways to involve people in civic process and institutions, let us create personalised learning tools and tailored services for minority groups, as well as enabling more convenient ways to watch and listen to our programmes and services," said Mr Highfield.

Mr Highfield said that government and industry must work more closely to tackle the barriers of affordability, accessibility and awareness of broadband to increase digital literacy in the UK.
