Kansas news site the Lawrence Journal-World was rewarded for its innovative news content yesterday when it won best small circulation news site at the Edgie awards.

The Lawrence Journal-World was one of the first daily newspapers in the US to begin publishing online. The site beat Online Athens and CJOnline to win best overall small-circulation news site.

"LJWorld.com is relentless in its pursuit of new methods to inform and engage its audience," commented the judges.

"The Journal-World’s highly converged newsroom inspires a culture of multi-layered storytelling – online-exclusive video and audio, Flash animations and audience-controlled 360-degree panoramic images – and exceptional database-driven features."

The Digital Edge Awards - or 'Edgies' - are organised by the Newspaper Association of America’s (NAA) New Media Federation, and took place after the association’s conference in Dallas at the weekend.

PilotOnline.com/HamptonRoads.com won best news site in the category for sites with a mid-size circulation of 75,000 to 250,000. The New York Times took the prize for best large-circulation news site.
