New award celebrates Paul Foot's legacy

Private Eye has teamed up with the Guardian to launch an annual journalism award in memory of Paul Foot, the investigative journalist and political campaigner who died in July last year.

The inaugural Paul Foot Award will celebrate investigative journalism published in print or online between October 2004 and August 2005.

Judges include Private Eye editor Ian Hislop, Guardian editor Alan Rusbridger and journalism veterans Richard Ingrams, Richard Stott and Bill Haggerty.

Entries can be single articles or a series of work produced by an individual or reporting team. Deadline for entries is 12 September and the winner will be presented with a £10,000 prize at a ceremony on 11 October.

Paul Foot was best known for his campaigning journalism, including investigations which helped to overturn the convictions of the Birmingham Six in 1991. He also won a string of awards including the 1994 George Orwell prize for journalism and journalist of the year in the What The Papers Say Awards 1972 and 1989.

Full details on the Paul Foot Award are available on the Private Eye website.
