The BBC has expanded its Creative Archive project to include highlights from 50 years of news coverage.The Open News Archive contains nearly 80 pieces of footage from key events including the London poll tax riots, the aftermath of Rajiv Gandhi's murder and Ellen MacArthur's return to Falmouth.
The public can download footage and re-edit it for use in their own non-commercial creative projects as the second phase of the archive. Further material will be added in the next few months.
"The big news stories of the last three decades are the punctuation marks in the stories of our lives," said Paul Gerhardt, project director of the Creative Archive Licence Group.
"The BBC's telling of those stories is part of our heritage, and now that the UK public have the chance to share and keep them we're keen to know how they will be used."
