Telegraph.co.uk relaunch visually links to paper

Europe's oldest online newspaper has been redesigned in response to suggestions from reader focus groups.

Telegraph.co.uk relaunched this week, sporting a cleaner white look, wider front page and the reappearance of the paper's traditional logo in the site masthead.

The left-hand navigation has been slimmed down and incorporates services like podcasts; a breaking news ticker has also been added and the home page contains just one advertisement.

The Daily Telegraph launched Electronic Telegraph as the web publishing boom began in November 1994, quickly winning praise. The site was later renamed telegraph.co.uk.

The redesign follows six months of user testing carried out by web consultancy Interesource, which recently redeveloped the paper's blogs portal.

"We used the results to identify the core values that we felt must be at the heart of the redesigned site," said news editor Shane Richmond. "One idea that arose during the discussion was that the site should take on a look that more closely resembled the newspaper. We needed a site that would support our plans for increased audio and video content."

Mr Richmond published design mock-ups considered during the revamp and said the new look would be gradually implemented across the site over the next few weeks.
