Sun Online has launched Sun Local, a free classifieds website, carrying more than two million adverts.

As part of a push to attract more readers to the site, The Sun has moved into a sector dominated by independent sites such as Craig's List and gumtree.com.

Sun Local offers adverts for goods and services ranging from cars and property to tickets for events; it even features listings for pets.

It is accessed via the Sun Online homepage and links readers to other sites, such as Craig's List, which host the adverts.

Readers can also post free adverts and send free email alerts. The site also features a blog by Sun consumer editor Charles Rae.

Earlier this month, at the World Newspaper Congress in Moscow, Les Hinton, executive chairman of News International, announced that the company's strategy was to "protect and extend" its newspapers by developing "online and mobile audiences".

This included a plan to triple page impressions for Times Online that involved launching Times TV - an online TV station based on the site.

The Sun’s new website is part of a broader scheme for the brand to act as hub across a range of platforms - online, mobile, newspaper - so that its readership can access information throughout the day.

Mr Hinton told the World Newspaper Congress that Sun Online attracted 6.8 million visitors in March with 136 million page impressions - a year-on-year growth of 52 per cent.

In May, Times Online generated 59.9 million page impressions. According to News International, its online revenue has risen 45 per cent year-on-year.
