Speaking at the 6th Brazilian Newspapers Congress, Nelson Sirotsky, re-elected president of the Newspapers National Association, spelt out his determination to engage internet search engines in discussions about pay.
According to Brazil News.net, Mr Sirotsky claimed that what internet search companies doing amounts to embezzlement as they are presenting material they did not produce themselves and keeping money that does not belong to them.
Several of Brazil's leading newspapers already inhibit the actions of search engines by having their content hosted on paid-for sites that restrict access.
Mr Sirotsky aims to enter into a dialog with domestic and international search engine companies to establish some common ground, although he has not ruled out the possibility of legal action.
