National Union of Journalists (NUJ) members at AOL UK have voted unanimously to ballot for industrial action over compulsory redundancies.

The NUJ claimed its members have been frustrated by a lack of detail from management over a restructuring deal that will see the internet service provider being sold to Carphone Warehouse.

Employees were told in September that jobs would be cut in the run up to the sale.

According to the union, members of the online customer experience department will still be employed by the Time Warner-owned part of AOL UK. However, the union claimed, they have been told that their department will be affected but have not been told how.

The union said that its members felt employers have not taken their request for voluntary redundancies seriously.

Jenny Lennox, NUJ's assistant organiser for new media, said: "Some NUJ members at AOL are very worried about their futures and they are receiving no reassurance from management.

"Things need not have got to this point had there been better communication but staff are feeling confused and anxious and felt they had to act to defend themselves."

The ballot will be on Wednesday, 29 November.
