Digg extends its reach beyond news

Digg has today spread its reach beyond news stories to begin rating and aggregating podcasts.

Digg's first step away from solely ranking news is designed to see if users will accept the wisdom of the crowds to find podcasts.

The developers have incorporated the standard Digg voting, sharing and discussion features to the new area.

Users can search podcasts across a range of categories (comedy, health, gaming) and Digg both subscription to a feed and individual episodes. It's also possible to listen to podcats on the site.

If successful, Digg may extend the service to cover other online, non-news content.

The site has also given video a unique channel away from the news area, where it was previously carried.

The channel, similarly, allows users to rate and recommend videos. A new feature also allows users to watch some videos directly on the Digg site rather than taking them elsewhere.

The site, which developers claim has 10 million unique users a month, has also introduced a Top 10 Stories feature that allows users to see the most popular stories at any given time, including stories that are no longer on the home page but are still receiving votes and are topics of discussion.
