Followers of Journalism.co.uk's news can now get news alerts via SMS (mobile text alerts) thanks to a new service we are trialling utilising the social networking site Twitter.

To participate in the trial, simply open an account at Twitter and add http://twitter.com/journalismnews to your list of friends (or enter http://twitter.com/friendships/create/3943871 once you have logged in), then add your mobile telephone and/or instant messaging (IM) details.

A text alert and/or IM message will be sent each time a news story is added. Because of the character limitations of Twitter, text may be truncated but there will be a link back to the full story.

If you prefer not to receive messages by text alert or instant messaging, Apple Mac users can download the free desktop application Twitterific and use that instead. Windows Vista users can try Twadget; Windows users have the option of triQQr and Twitteroo, among others.

Jobseekers can also subscribe to our other current trial - job alerts by Twitter (http://twitter.com/journalismjobs).

Subscribers to either of these services will not be charged by either Twitter or Journalism.co.uk. Please also note that this is a trial service only - we reserve the right to modify or withdraw the service at any time.
