Spain's parliament has passed a law designed to make internet service providers (ISPs) more responsible for the content they publish.

The legislation is designed to bring the country in line with the rest of the European Union, and will mean that electronic transactions are subject to the same regulation as physical business deals.

It bans spam and requires ISPs to store data on clients for more than a year. The ruling centre-right Popular Party said the changes were necessary to help track criminal activity, while the opposition Socialist Party has raised concerns about privacy implications.
