In a bid to increase print sales, the web site of the UK journalists' trade paper the Press Gazette (www.pressgazette.co.uk) is to close off some of its content this month, as it makes a move into subscription-only viewing.

The trade magazine will now offer unlimited use of its web site as part of a £74 per year subscription package to the print publication, with a password-protected area for members.

Some content will still be available free-of-charge, including the jobs section, contacts and freelance directory.

"It's an economic decision," said Ian Reeves, editor of the Press Gazette. "Our subscribers are paying for a publication that's free on the internet, which isn't entirely fair. This way, we can make our readers happy and boost our print sales."

Emap Construction made a leap into subscription-only viewing at the end of 2002, charging for some of its content for the online editions of Architects' Journal, Construction News and New Civil Engineer Titles (see http://www.journalism.co.uk/news/story522.html ).

After a four-year run on the internet, Mr Reeves feels it is now time to move on. "People are beginning to realise that the days of a free lunch on the internet are coming to an end."
