Famed for being the first news network to broadcast a statement by Osama bin Laden, page views for Al Jazeera have increased dramatically, from approximately 700,000 daily hits to 3 million since the September 11th terrorist attacks. More than 40% of visitors are from the USA.
Plans for the English version of the site have been in the pipeline for more than a year. "It will be original news in English, tailored to a Western audience. We are very conscious of our pole position in world media terms at the moment," said Joanne Tucker, managing editor of Al Jazeera's English-language Web site.
Al Jazeera is also considering plans for an English-language television channel.
