Most of the new charges will be for existing services, such
as crosswords and its two email services, The Wrap (a daily summary of UK newsapers) and The Informer (a lunchtime news round-up). The site itself will remain free to view, but with a new option to pay for an advertising-free version.
Emily Bell, editor-in-chief of Guardian Unlimited, said: "We are absolutely committed to keeping access to our site free and our independent journalism available to the widest possible audience.
"[But] the reality of running a successful free website is that we have to find new ways to maximise our revenue so that we can continue to support the highest quality journalism."
The paid-for services will be enhanced, with an option for html versions of the two newsletters. Guardian Unlimited Crosswords will include 15 new puzzles each week and a new monthly prize crossword.
The crossword editor, Professor Hugh Stephenson, will also be responding to user questions and writing a monthly email.
