Announcing the deal on 8 July, MTV News vice-president Ocean McAdams said: "Her coverage of the DNC will help us reach our goal of 20 million 18 to 30-year-old voters."
The Wonkette blog is known for its irreverent style and political gossip and claims a readership of around 400,000 every month.
US newspaper the Washington Post (WP) reported the MTV deal before the Wonkette blog.
"We are so embarrassed," writes Ms Cox.
"Scooped by the WP's Reliable Source and about our own career, no less!"
