Nottingham Trent University graduate Hasina Khan has been awarded student online journalist of the year for a site reporting on a gay ethnic group in the UK.

The award-winning entry, nominated for the recent Press Gazette awards, was a website that examined the problems faced by Britain's South Asian community.

"I decided on my winning topic because it was a subject that I wasn't very tuned up on," Ms Khan told dotJournalism.

"I was very surprised to find how the South Asian community simply treated homosexuality and South Asian gay men as being 'invisible'."

The £500 prize was presented at the end of June at a ceremony in London, along with awards that included best feature writer, scoop of the year and student journalist of the year.

The other three finalists for the student online journalist award were Helen Groom and Anna McDermott of Westminster University, and Andrew Ellson of Goldsmiths College.

Judges, including Press Gazette editor Ian Reeves and Karl Schneider, editor-in-chief of Computer Weekly, praised Hasina's site for making full use of the internet's multimedia capabilities.

Ms Khan studied part-time for an MA in Online Journalism at Nottingham Trent University and is currently working there as a broadcast assistant.
