The University of Kent's Centre for Journalism has launched a new annual scholarship funded by Associated Newspapers.

The Daily Mail scholarship will be awarded to a postgraduate multimedia journalism student from next year. Students accepted on the MA in Multimedia Journalism will be eligible and the winner of the prize worth £10,000 will have their annual tuition fees covered.

The scholar will also be given work experience at the Daily Mail, a release from the university says.

"The successful postgraduate will be ideally placed, through our MA course and the work placement, to learn about the demands of working at the very top level of modern multimedia journalism in print and online," says Tim Luckhurst, professor of journalism and head of the Centre for Journalism, in the release.

"We'll be asking applicants to submit a proposal for, and then write, a story that would fit the Daily Mail's style. We have a very high standard of applicant to our journalism courses here at Kent and competition for places is intense. I'm expecting this scholarship to produce some outstanding examples of student journalism."

The competition for the scholarship will be advertised from spring 2011 with the award made shortly after successful applicants begin the postgraduate course in October.

"We believe in the future of journalism and that will be best served by well-trained young journalists coming into the profession. The University of Kent is at the forefront of this ambition," says Robin Esser, executive managing editor of the Daily Mail, in the release.
