Launching the ONA and its website, Richard Jaroslovsky, the president and managing editor of The Wall Street Journal Interactive Edition, said: 'This organisation, like the online medium itself, is still very much a work in progress. Our goals for both are the same: We aim to make them better.'
The list of founding members represents the cream of journalists working on the best online news sites in the US. They include editor of Time.com Janice Castro, executive producer of ZDNet News Patrick Houston and Bernie Gwertzman, editor of New York Times on the Web.
At launch meetings in the US, the ONA has described the unique challenges facing online journalists as news sites often commission online 'packages' that require words and pictures using digital cameras. 'Teamwork' is often considered a necessity. ZDNet reports that the company's television and print staff work together to produce online stories.
ONA membership is open to any journalists in the world who write news on the internet or other digital platforms. Membership fees vary and full details are listed on the ONA website.
