Though revenues fell at the end of the year, 'the 49 per cent year-over-year growth rate for paid content in that quarter still outpaced the overall e-commerce growth rate of 23% over the same period', according to the report.
Despite subscriptions accounting for 41 per cent of overall content sales, the research showed that news consumers often opt for a monthly model.
• The OPA is opening a European branch for the first time, with founder members to include the Financial Times, Le Monde, El Pais and Der Spiegel.
Traditionally seen as 'big players club', the OPA seeks to promote large online brands. It also pushes the internet as a publishing and advertising medium, with research and best-practice projects.
