Since publishing a story on Oscar-winning documentary maker Michael Moore, dotJournalism has received an unprecedented number of angry emails from the US.

The story detailed how Mr Moore’s site received a record number of hits after his controversial Oscar acceptance speech.

Since it was posted on 31 March (2003), approximately 100 emails have arrived. Many of them containing only one or two-word expletives. Others are more coherent.

Larry Brock writes: "I think I represent the average American today. I can assure you that most Americans despise Mr Moore and see through him for the phoney he is. Mr Moore is a liar. He has an agenda and he uses his so-called documentaries to send out his message.

"Mr Moore has always been against the National Rifle Association (NRA) and Americans' right to own firearms. Most individuals such as Moore had their beliefs instilled in them as a child. Men with this attitude had mommies that made them play with dolls well into their teens. Most have never held a real job, especially one that requires physical labour. They have never played organised sports especially contact sports.

"Those crabby old supervisors of elections that were democrats and over-the-hill, men-hating virgins thought they were going to decide an election. Mr Bush won Florida. He won it on every hand-count and machine count performed."

According to Ronald Best, another opinionated emailer: "In the field of mockumentary filmmaking, there are two giants. Rob Reiner created the genre with his film ‘This is Spinal Tap’. Michael Moore has taken the genre to an entirely different level, with ‘Bowling for Columbine'."

Preferring to remain anonymous, SS says: "I, along with millions of Americans, only went to Michael Moore's web site to email him on being such a fool. I dissected his idiotic statements with fact, and emailed the coward. He or his staff gave no reply. The Michael Moore web hits are mostly from people who dislike him and go to his site to read his nonsense, and to reply to his nonsense."

DotJournalism received a similarly vitriolic email response to our most recent story on Salon.com (http://www.journalism.co.uk/news/story612.html), which received more than 63,000 hits.
