Isaac Ginsbury, senior negotiator at FD Kensington, says that the financial turmoil of recent months is behind the change in attitude.Previously accountants wanting to retire would choose a purchaser who ticked most of the boxes. Now they are not 100 per cent sure if retirement will work out financially and appear to be using the excuse that the buyer isn't quite good enough. Every box needs ticked before they sign the dotted line.
Norman Younger, director and founder of FD Kensington, notes that this will clearly exacerbate the shortage of accountancy practices for sales and may tempt buyers to increase their offers, which could possibly solve the retirement conundrum for sellers.
He notes that 2012 could be an interesting year with multiples exceeding recent averages. "Cash buyers are still out there waving their money in front of sellers" says Younger, and concludes by noting that "every man has his price".
