For the past few years, My Favourite Voucher Codes has noticed a rise in the number of people choosing to holiday in the UK, rather than shell out for a flight and a holiday abroad. As families clamp down on their spending and try to reduce their outgoings, fewer are choosing to travel further afield. Two thirds of people holidaying in the UK in 2012 did so in order to save money.

However, some research suggests that it might actually be more expensive. The same research found that less than quarter of those polled said they spent less on a domestic break than on a previous foreign holiday. So, with prices so high in the UK, does it really work out cheaper to go on a summer staycation, and do voucher codes help people find further discounts?

My Favourite Voucher Codes compares the cost of a 7-night holiday for a family of two adults and two children in August in Spain against somewhere in the UK.

Holidays abroad

1) First Choice holidays

First Choice has thousands of holidays available in August, but the cheapest found was an all-inclusive holiday in San Pedro De Alcantara, Costa del Sol at £1,976. This price includes return flights from Glasgow on 8th August, seven nights in three star Hotel Cortijo Blanco, as well as all food and drink. This means once you’ve booked, you don’t have to spend another penny on your holiday - something to keep in mind for people on a tight budget.

You can save up to £200 on holidays abroad with our First Choice voucher codes.

2) Iberostar Hotels

If you’d rather book directly with the hotel, rather than going through a travel operator, you can create your own bespoke holiday, including a week-long stay in Malaga for £1124. The Iberostar Malaga Playa is a 4-star hotel situated right on the beach, but only includes accommodation, the cost of flights and transfers will need to be added. You could also change the board to all inclusive for an additional £500.

How much could you get off your holiday with a 10% saving thanks to Iberostar hotels voucher codes.

3) Easyjet Package holidays

Easyjet is famous for its cheap flights to Europe, but it also does package holidays, offering a budget solution to families for just £1,404. This price includes return flights from London Gatwick to Palma, Majorca, transfers to the hotel and a self-catering apartment at the Club Bellevue Apartments. Remember, self-catering means you will have to buy your own food and drink, adding to the total cost.

UK holidays

1) Butlins

Butlins is one of the first names that pops into your head when thinking about UK staycations. Families can bag a silver apartment, which includes two bedrooms, kitchen/dining area, lounge and shower room, at the Minehead resort for just £1,186. Price also includes admission to Splash Waterworld.

Families of four could save £20 with Butlins voucher codes.

2) Cottage Holiday Group

The Cottage Holiday Group has a huge number of apartments and cottages around the UK, including Hannah’s Cottage in Newcastle upon Tyne for £470. It has two bedrooms, one bathroom, garden and decking area, as well as kitchen facilities. The £470 price tag applies one week starting 1st August.

3) Park Holidays

For a family caravan holiday on the Essex coast, look no further than Steeple Bay Holiday Park, which offers a week’s stay for just £371. Despite being the budget van, it has all the necessary facilities, including kitchen, two bedrooms and colour TV. However, you can upgrade to a premium caravan for more money.

Save up to 50% on your staycation with Park Holidays voucher codes.

It’s clear to see that accommodation is definitely cheaper in the UK, even when you consider the discounts available with voucher codes on foreign holidays. However, all inclusive holidays are likely to provide better value for money because all food and drink is paid for in the headline price.

My Favourite Voucher Codes recommends shopping around, comparing like-for-like holidays where possible to find the best possible price. It’s also worth installing the voucher codes app to alert you when you could save money.
