Drawing on the experience of successful senior managers the report, Authentic Leadership, details the key competencies for management success. The interviewees from major UK and global companies were attendees of eve-olution’s leadership seminars and the report was compiled from 360 degree performance reviews carried out as part of the learning process.
“The information gathered from our seminar delegates was so useful we decided to turn it into a checklist to help individuals evaluate their strengths and development needs and to construct a plan to climb the ranks in business,” said eve-olution founder Tracey Carr. “Understanding the qualities needed to rise to the top could be the career boost female managers need.”
There has been much speculation about how women in leadership positions will be affected by the credit crunch and recession, said Tracey Carr.
“On the one hand there has been talk of greater opportunity as firms value a more cautious approach to risk, which is a typical female trait. On the other hand it is reported that women can be more likely to suffer when teams are cutback as they spend less time than their male colleagues making sure their contribution is visible. Both could be true.”
She said that women need to take charge of their careers and ensure that they are prepared to take advantage of any opportunities that come their way, but also that they are aware of where they might be vulnerable.
“We call our model Authentic Leadership because we are strong advocates of the idea that men and women have different skills, traits and abilities and we are keen to encourage women to lead in their own style and with their own voice, even if this differs from the traditional male style.”
