The k9project who specialise in providing canine assisted learning and activities launch a brand new initiative for the summer holidays- a 3 day programme scheme with a difference. The programme is designed for vulnerable or disaffected children and young people who might need more than more generic holiday activitites can provide. The three days are filled with doggy learning in a fun environment which will teach the youngsters aged between 10 -14 all about being safe around dogs and what is involved in choosing and caring for a dog. In addition they get a chance to spend lots of time hands on with dogs- learning obedience, agility, and flyball, grooming, bathing and exercising . A range of visiting speakers will come along to talk about their experiences with dogs. Oneliferescue will talk about rescuing dogs and in particular the plight of the Staffordshire Bull Terrier- a few staffy puppies will be joining them to bring home the message of responsible dog ownership. Canine Partners will be sending an assistance dog and his owner to demonstrate the life enhancing bond between dog and owner, as well as some pretty amazing tasks. Commitments permitting there may also be police dogs performing! When the dogs need a rest there will also be sports and games and the three days kicks off with t- shirt printing and art work, and culminates with a mini dog show so the young people can show off what they have learnt.

The therapuetic benefits of being around animals is well documented and dogs are great in that they provide a non judgemental response to humans- they do not care if you are fat or thin, or if you can read or write. For the vulnerable youngsters this programme is designed for they provide instant feedback, as well as something to cuddle!

The programme is heavily supported by our hosts, Charlies Dog Training Centre in Soham, Cambs and has recieved support from the Blue Cross, Your Dog Magazine and Dogs Monthly Magazine as well as staff and associates from the Canine and Feline Behaviour Association - Colin Tennant, Ross McCarthy and Amanda Wall. Staff are all volunteers and are a combination of k9project staff, youth workers and school based staff, social workers and local dog trainers.
