06 FEBRUARY 2012 – More than a quarter of Brits don't have any idea how much money their partner is paid, according to a new survey carried out this week. The poll was conducted by money-saving website DiscountVouchers.co.uk and discovered that more than 25 per cent of respondents are unaware of their partner's wage details.

27.25 per cent of Brits have no knowledge of what their partner makes, and twice as many women admitted that they keep private. 8% per cent of women maintain personal accounts while only 4 per cent of men do.

The new DiscountVouchers.co.uk survey also discovered that 43 per cent of women have lied to loved ones about the sort of money they pay for clothing, while only 17 per cent of men said the same. Respondents told DiscountVouchers.co.uk that guilt was their chief motivation for lying to their partner like this.

The  voucher codes website's survey also found that 40 per cent of UK consumers open and read their partners' bank statements and credit card bills on a regular basis. Conversely, nearly 10 per cent of those people polled reported that they rarely bother looking at even their own financial correspondence.

Psychologist Dr Penny Goldsbrough says: "There is undoubtedly an innate fear of trusting one's partner in these results, that is the sort of issue which leads people to peek at a partner's bank statements. Lack of trust is also the reason that people set up private bank accounts - there is a lot of low self esteem and fear of the unknown around in UK consumers."

Dr Goldsbrough goes on: "In many cases grown up women copy the behavioural patterns of their mothers, so if their mum had lied about spending habits, so too the daughter may as well. People love to spend money on themselves but they do also feel guilt about it too."
