This PPC search engine marketing placement had it's beginnings in 1998 when Jeffrey Brewer of Goto.com suggested this pay-per-click way of searching as a way for advertisers and website owners to have certain keywords in their texts which are flagged by the search engine being used.
When a person puts certain words or phrases into a particular search engine that match an advertisers keywords on a list, that website will be displayed. This was a new concept in the online advertising industry. The advertiser only pays the host or website owner whenever someone puts in a word on his keyword list. This system is different than the typical bidding system which seeks to route many people to just one website.
This type of advertising is revolutionary and can be used much more. It's also more fair since people typing in certain keywords can be directed to exactly the web content they seek. There are two types of cost-per-click, bid-based and flat-rate. With flat-rate the advertiser and the host agree on a certain fee to be paid for every time a person clicks using a particular keyword query.
Bid-based pay-per-click involves entering into a contract to bid on certain keywords used by the Internet surfer. Both of these types of cost-per-click can be beneficial to both the advertiser and the website owner.
