TNTJ December: Building your online brand
Well it’s been another month of shorthand cramp, Photoshop eyes and court reporting exams (92 percent!) and the next TNTJ topic is decided: “How have you built your online brand?”
I’ll start by saying that my online brand efforts have been small when compared with other bloggers. I’m still in J-school for the moment, and the importance of making a presence for myself online will be greater when I graduate next year.
I suppose having a blog was my first step. I started this blog – Applebyline (originally called LA Online) – in early 2008. I changed the name for SEO reasons (too many LA’s Online).
I’m thinking next year I’ll splash out and pay for a proper domain name and put a CV on there.
I joined TNTJ when forced into it by Dave Lee, which keeps me posting, and sends me a fair amount of traffic.
Apart from joining a few Facebook groups and the like I have done remarkably little to build my brand. Unwise? Probably. Too late? Never.
Most of my effort is concentrated on publishing stories to www.newswire.co.nz (our school news site) and my blog is linked to from there. We are getting a decent number of hits per month now and have managed to trump the major news sites a number of times in coverage on Wellington events.
I am looking forward to seeing what my fellow TNTJ contributors post for this topic, as many of us are super-connected, net-savvy people.

Building an Online Brand is not for the faint for the faint hearted. Being a founder of a new media service (Bighow.com, the web’s only all-in-one free online publishing tool), I can tell from experience that:
1. It takes time. Granted anyone can publish online but it is a different thing: getting noticed.
2. Be prepared to stay in for the long haul: You may build an audience with your hard work but you will have to work harder to keep that audience as it is likely to move to the next new thing.
