A new report from the Reuters Institute highlights a generational shift in attitudes towards AI and chatbots in news. Young people aged 18–24 are leading the way in using AI tools to access and interpret news, with 15 per cent using chatbots weekly— five times the rate of those over 55.

The research shows that nearly half of young chatbot users turn to AI specifically to help make news stories easier to understand or to evaluate sources. Comfort with AI-generated news is also much higher among this group: 30 per cent are happy with news produced mostly by AI, and 43 per cent are comfortable with AI-assisted news – a trend that progressively diminishes amongst older generations.

These findings are part of a broader set of insights into how young audiences engage with news today — from their preference for visual platforms like TikTok and Instagram, to their lower levels of trust and interest in news compared to older generations, and their growing appetite for video and audio formats.
