The Press Association has announced the appointment of Alan Marshall as the group's new managing editor.

Marshall takes over from John Spencer who left the company at the end of last month.

In his most recent role as head of digital production Marshall oversaw the launch of PA's liveblogging services.

According to a release from PA today, Marshall's new role will see him develop content strategies and "co-ordinate processes between editorial content, technology and product development". He will also be responsible for managing editorial projects for major events, such as the 2012 London Olympics. "Alan’s strong digital background makes him perfectly placed to take on the role of group managing editor,"

Tony Waston, managing director of the Press Association said in the release.

"The requirements of our customers are constantly evolving as consumers find new and innovative ways to consume content, and it is vital that our products and services continue to anticipate these changes. "By leading a fully co-ordinated approach across the group, Alan will ensure that we make full use of all the high quality content we have available, and that it is delivered to customers in a form that suits their needs."

In May Marshall spoke at Journalism.co.uk's news:rewired event about liveblogging. You can find more from this session here.
