Community newspaper the North Edinburgh News will close this week with the loss of three jobs.

The free paper, which is delivered to 14,500 homes in Edinburgh and read by around 36,000 people, was started by community campaigners 30 years ago.

But council funding has been withdrawn, forcing closure.

The paper has been supported by a number of organisations in the past with the most recent funding coming from the Fairer Scotland Fund distributed by Edinburgh Council.

Last year the funding for the paper was reduced to £35,000-a-year when three full-time staff reduced their hours.

Editor Mary Burnside told Journalism.co.uk she hopes the NEN blog , which was set up by the paper earlier this year, will continue.
