Culture, politics and current affairs magazine Current Intelligence is looking for photographers, photojournalists and videojournalists to help it launch a new blog dedicated to visual journalism.
The monthly magazine and website, which started its life as a blog, will use the new blog on photography and photojournalism to pull together the images it uses on its website and discuss the decisions behind including these visuals.
"The effort that goes into searching for and finding the right kind of images to go with with the writing we publish; why we choose certain images and not others; the background details of the images we do choose, and the photographers who take these shots - all of that is interesting backstory that we're not capturing or featuring anywhere," Michael Innes, editor and publisher of Current Intelligence, told Journalism.co.uk.
"The images we've used so far are also scattered here and there across the website - they're not being compiled anywhere central. A gallery didn't feel right for Current Intelligence, but a blog that pulls it all together, that provides some descriptive detail and additional insight into our editorial processes and into the content itself, felt like a good fit."
The blog will also be used to highlight some of the best photography, photojournalism and videojournalism produced by military public affairs branches that relates to the foreign policy, war and conflict stories that Current Intelligence runs.
"We're not photographers, and much of what we're doing is from a non-specialist perspective. So there's an interest in getting people involved in this who actually know something about photography, photojournalism, video reporting, and the like. I broached the general idea with one of our editors, Graham Holliday, a freelance foreign correspondent based in Kigali, Rwanda, who runs an excellent photoblog and wire service called Kigaliwire.com . I also approached Deborah Bonello, who's got these two great sites, MexicoReporter.com and TheVideoReporter.com , and brainstormed a bit with her about how she might get involved with the project," said Innes.
"Both Graham and Deborah have done great things leveraging social media tools and free or inexpensive approaches to doing quality journalism, at a time when traditional media are in flux. That's consistent with how we've been doing things at Current Intelligence. We're also interesting in the possibility of partnering with individual photographers or agencies in some way that combines their visual content with the depth of writing and analysis that we offer on current issues. This photoblog is a solid first step in that direction."
The new blog will be launched in January. Photographers or photojournalists who want to get involved should email
