Hi all, Jacob here. The response to our new website this week has been genuinely encouraging. So many of you have reached out to share your experiences.

What's really pleasing to see is people appreciating the new sections and services, like new freelance directory.

I jumped on a call with media consultant Khalil Cassimally, who told me he noticed (and appreciated) our new focus on ‘inspire me’ stories: "Inspiring content makes me feel part of a community of people who just so happen to be in the same industry"

We know there's still a few tweaks to make (thanks to everyone who’s caught the little things!), but your feedback is helping us shape something truly useful. Keep it coming.

How The Bureau of Investigative Journalism tracks impact

We all want to believe that journalism can change the world. But how do you actually measure that impact? Our latest feature takes you behind the scenes at the The Bureau of Investigative Journalism, where tracking the ripple effects of their stories is just as important as breaking them. We cover:

  • A four-step process to tracking impact across investigations
  • A gold, silver and bronze impact tiering system
  • How media amplification and co-publishing partnerships work
  • Why crediting the sources shouldn't be overlooked as impact. Community organiser Lucy Brisbane McKay puts it clearly:
"The charity sector comms people are often the backbone of journalism and should be viewed as collaborators and experts, not just sources"
How The Bureau of Investigative Journalism tracks impact
Classic investigative journalism can be tracked in four steps. But sometimes impact is not so easily quantifiable

🗳️ Community pulse

A huge thank you and shout-out to Mattia Peretti, who’s been a guiding light this week as we’ve launched this newsletter. I’ve bugged him on everything from how to send a test mailer (properly) to how to make things more manageable for our small team. I'm sure he won’t mind me forwarding this gem:

“If I’m still writing my newsletter nine months after the start, it’s mostly because I made it extremely easy on me, by sort of ‘templating’ it with the 7-links format. How can you make it easy on yourself?”

It's a great tip and you can see it in action on Mattia’s newsletter News Alchemists, where he keeps track of powerful media innovation. I'm a sucker for a spreadsheet and he keeps a very cool one.

🎤 Ask the expert

Anyone who has watched an episode of hit podcast Diary of a CEO knows they are one of the best produced shows on the scene.

In particular, it's trailers are fantastic. They sell the episode in seconds and generate hype before the episode has aired. It really does make me feel like I'm at the cinema waiting for the film to start. See what I mean?

The mastermind behind the strategy is Anthony Smith, and I'm excited to be interviewing him next week. My question is, what do you want to know?

If you've got a question you'd like me to put to him, hit reply and let me know.

Victoria Derbyshire on TikTok: 'Give young people the facts, skip the graphic details'

BBC News journalist and newsreader Victoria Derbyshire gave a brilliant interview to the John Schofield Trust recently. She covers a lot of ground here, but I love what she has to say about her TikTok account. She's amassed a 511k following since joining the platform in 2022 amid the Ukraine war.

“I love TikTok because of the engagement and the wide range of demographics. You can get analytics on TikTok so you can see how many women are listening, what sort of age group, where in the world they're watching, listening... I learned from the feedback that I got from [young people] that they wanted to know what was happening. But they didn't want gory pictures, horrible pictures. They absolutely wanted descriptions about what was going on, but they didn't want it to be graphic... I felt a real responsibility and it just sort of grew from there.”

Tune into the full episode to learn more about her career highs and lows:
