The Express & Star and Shropshire Star have launched mobile versions of their websites.

News and sport content will feature heavily on the mobile sites, which will be updated automatically during the day to cover breaking news stories and can be accessed from all internet-enabled handsets.

The sites, which were built by the publisher's online arm MNA Digital in partnership with Bromsgrove-based mobile technology firm Wapple, are intended to 'complement the existing print and online products', MNA said.

The sites support images as well as text and will allow readers to post comments on articles to the papers' websites.

Traffic from mobile devices to the MNA websites has shown steady growth in recent months, said David Ratcliffe, head of digital at MNA Digital, in a press release.

"Print customers are used to being able to take their MNA newspaper anywhere, now the digital audience can access content on the move. The new mobile sites offer an exciting opportunity to better understand the dynamics of this channel," he said.

Internal figures for July suggested the Express & Star website attracted 380,000 unique users and recorded 6.6 million page impressions.

According to the same data, the Shropshire Star site had 120,000 unique users and 2 million page impressions.

Last month Trinity Mirror announced plans to launch mobile websites for 12 of its regional titles in the autumn.
