Google News has started carrying YouTube videos from several of its content partners - including Reuters, Hearst and CBS - as part of test programme.
The service is being offered only in the US, UK, and Ireland. Although Google has said it hopes to make it available in other countries and alternative languages in the near future.
The company drew the ire of some newspaper figures two weeks ago by starting a limited comments service allowing those involved in certain stories on its US news pages to submit comments that were then carried under story links.
Some complained the search engine was 'beginning to inject values and judgments into (other people's) journalism.'
The new service works by mixing video links with others clustered round a story. Links are prefixed "Video" next to story titles (as shown below).

However, instead of the link opening a second page, clicking the link instead opens the YouTube player directly on the news page.

“Viewing news videos or other content types on the web can be a frustrating experience. You often get videos that don't play, sites that require different video player downloads, or have misleading descriptions of the content,” stated the Google News blog as it broke news of the new addition.
“That's why we're working with YouTube so you can easily view online videos without any downloads required and regardless of what browser you're using.”
