A human rights lawyer from Iran who has represented detained journalists has been arrested on charges of anti-government propaganda, according to national reports.
Nasrin Sotoudeh was arrested on Saturday and according to a report by the Los Angeles Times her office and home have both been searched.
In the past Sotoudeh has represented a number of high-profile imprisoned journalists, including Isa Saharkhiz , founder member of the Society for the Defence of Freedom of the Press in Iran jailed in 2009. Reporters Without Borders today condemned the arrest of Sotoudeh in a report on its website. "Nasrin Sotoudeh has for the past year been the spokesperson of the victims of injustice, of those the regime is trying to silence," they said in a release.
"Detained journalists and other political prisoners are denied their most basic rights. Lawyers cannot visit their detained clients or see their case files. Now the repression is being stepped up a notch. By arresting lawyers, the regime is trying to gag the last dissenting voices. Lawyers’ organisations throughout the world must demand this courageous lawyer’s immediate release."
