The International Olympic Committee (IOC) is to launch its own YouTube channel to broadcast clips from the Beijing Olympics.

The channel will make on-demand footage of the Games available to 77 countries, which have not bought rights to digital video content or have non-exclusive rights to broadcast coverage.

The content will be produced by IOC subsidiary company Olympic Broadcasting Services (OBS) and include news and highlights of the competitions, a press release from the IOC said.

The channel will go live from Wednesday August 6 in preparation for the start of the Games on Friday.

"The IOC’s Channel will make fantastic Olympic footage available where young generations of sports fans are already going for online entertainment, and will complement the footage offered in these territories by our broadcast partners across all media platforms," said Timo Lumme, IOC director of television and marketing services.

Between the channel and rights-holding broadcasters, this will be the first time that digital media coverage of the Olympics has been freely available across the globe, the IOC said.
