Robert Shrimsley will replace FT.com editor James Montgomery, in the newly created role of managing editor, the Financial Times has announced.

Shrimsley, who was previously the FT's news editor and wrote the paper's Notebook column, will oversee editorial content and digital/print integration, working alongside managing director Rob Grimshaw, who oversees overall strategy and commercial performance.

Montgomery is 'exploring several options' including other roles at the publication, a release from the FT said.

The nature of these roles was not disclosed, but a spokesperson told Journalism.co.uk they could be in both print and online as part of a more integrated approach.

Earlier this week the FT announced plans to make 80 staff redundant across its global operations.

While Shrimsley replaces Montgomery, who

has been editor of the site since March 2006

, the spokesperson said his role was a newly created position with different responsibilities.

The appointments coincide with FT.com hitting one million registered users, the release said.

This milestone 'follows the rollout of the new look FT.com and the success of our access model', which allows registered users free access to a certain number of articles a month, Rob Grimshaw, a strong advocate of the paid-for subscription model , said.

"Together with the quality of our editorial, the FT is now in a real position of strength online. The number of registered users is significant as information on the FT's targetable users is particularly compelling for advertisers," he said.

Other new appointments include a move for John Thornhill, from European edition editor to news editor. Martin Dickson, the FT's deputy editor, will take on additional responsibility for the European edition.
