Sky News has announced the appointment of Jonathan Levy as head of news gathering.

The broadcaster announced that Levy would take over from Simon Cole in August, who last month announced he was to move back onto the newsdesk as duty home news editor.

According to Sky in his new role Levy, who was most recently executive producer of politics, will be in charge of how Sky News delivers the news agenda to viewers across the world.

"Jonathan will work closely alongside John Ryley, head of Sky News, and Chris Birkett, executive editor and deputy head of Sky News, to ensure the channel remains first for breaking news and analysis across all its platforms – TV, online, mobile, radio and iPad," the release added.

Levy joined Sky News in 2002 from NBC London and has been in charge of Sky News' political operation for the past six years, according to the release.

"Jonathan is a first rate journalist and his role is absolutely vital within the organisation," John Ryley was quoted as saying,

"This year has been one of the most successful in Sky News' history – and I know Jonathan will work tirelessly to ensure that this continues."
