Upday is hiring an associate news editor to join its growing curation team in the UK.

Upday is an award-winning news app launched by Axel Springer in partnership with Samsung for its flagship smartphones and devices. This is an exciting opportunity to be a part of one of the largest news apps in Europe with 25 million monthly active users across 34 countries.

We are looking for someone with a background in journalism who is sharp, curious, and enthusiastic about surfacing content from a diverse set of publishing partners.

Your role

  • Curate the biggest and most interesting stories of the day and rewrite headlines to make them pop on our app
  • Condense large amounts of complex information into snappy, clear, and accurate bullet points
  • Choose images and write compelling captions to share across our social media channels
  • Use a variety of data analytics tools to continually optimise our sources, story selection, and audience performance
  • Work with the UK head of editorial to establish the day's agenda
  • Produce original features from time to time that range in length and style, from news briefings and timely explainers to compelling deep-dives
  • Shift work - including nights and weekends - is a requirement of the role

Your profile

  • Impeccable news judgment and experience writing news in a fast-paced online environment
  • Excellent proofreading skills and an ability to self-edit are required
  • You understand the mobile digital world and know how to write headlines and choose images that will excite and engage Upday's audience
  • A strong ability to work to strict deadlines and perform detailed work, sometimes under the significant pressure of breaking news
  • Bursting with big ideas on the day's most pressing topics and trends
  • Can pitch and craft engrossing, must-read articles and is able to translate intricate ideas for a broad and diverse audience
  • Experience with Photoshop and other graphics skills are a bonus!
  • Collaborates effectively with others
