The Great Daily of the North, The Northern Echo is looking for an audience and content editor to help lead its talented, award-winning team to the next level as we undertake a major digital transformation.

This is a key leadership role with Newsquest's flagship daily at a period of record-breaking digital growth and we are looking for a creative, senior journalist ready to lead our team of talented reporters, drive our content plan and take us to new heights digitally and in print as we cement our position as the North's premier news brand.

About you

You will need to be able to direct our team of reporters across the North-East, analyse analytics to spot trends and make sure we are the number one trusted brand for in-depth, breaking and trending content that is led by the needs of our audience. You will be equally comfortable planning off-diary investigations on hard-hitting subjects with your reporters as you are analysing Google Trends and Crowdtangle to ensure the live, on-the-minute reporting our readers demand in a 24-hour news cycle.

The right candidate will be someone who lives and breathes quality news and is guided by audience habits. You will understand the needs and pressures of a fast-moving modern newsroom, be able to spot the news trends and react to them fast and be able to shift focus at the drop of a hat to help us deliver the best possible content to our audience.

You will have strong experience of working in the regional press, an established background in leading editorial teams, and - above all - a firm grasp of multimedia journalism, digital content development and social media for this exciting role.

But most importantly, you will be a positive, creative journalist who constantly strives to develop new skills and who is passionate about putting their stamp on things to ensure the continued success of local and regional journalism as a force for good.

About us

The Northern Echo is one of the best-selling regional newspapers in the UK and Newsquest's flagship title. As part of Newsquest, you will join one of the biggest publishing companies in the UK during a period of major digital transformation.

Based in Darlington (when offices reopen), The Northern Echo is situated in one of the most beautiful parts of the country, with the Yorkshire Dales and North York Moors national parks on our doorstep, as well as the North Pennines Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. A truly unique area, our patch is home to beautiful towns, including Dominic Cummings' favourite Barnard Castle, and exciting cities like Durham and Newcastle, as well as coastal retreats like Saltburn.

The position is being offered with a competitive salary and offers the right candidate a unique opportunity to raise their profile within the media community.
