WIRED is looking for a dynamic audience growth manager to develop and execute a data-driven audience growth strategy across all digital platforms.

An important bridge between the editorial, commercial, product and marketing teams, this role ensures that audience intelligence is at the heart of our editorial, product and commercial strategies.

Reporting to the UK head of audience growth and US global director of audience development, but embedded within the WIRED editorial team, the successful candidate will work closely with the central digital and data teams to push WIRED's position at the forefront of science and technology journalism.

Key duties and responsibilities

  • Create and execute data-driven strategies to increase readership, video views and social engagement on a 24/7 schedule of content
  • Own and lead regular analysis of WIRED articles, feeding back to the digital editor to optimise existing content and future output
  • Tracking of all key performance metrics; building daily, weekly and monthly reports in addition to ad hoc investigations
  • Lead the WIRED team's SEO efforts by providing regular advice both in realtime and via regular team meetings
  • Act as the team's eyes and ears on social, SEO and all analytics platforms, alerting the team to breaking events, trending topics and feeding into the editorial workflow to maximise traffic
  • Work with the social media manager to grow engagement and traffic from social media channels combining data-informed approach with the unique WIRED editorial voice
  • Work alongside the digital editor to lead the forward-planning process through the curation and expansion of our data-aware calendar of seasonal topics for both audience development and commercial gain
  • Be a super-user of and train editorial team on tools including Google Analytics, Facebook Insights, Twitter Analytics, Crowdtangle, Pi Datametrics, Shareablee etc
  • Support commercial teams with audience insights that they can use to win briefs and optimise branded content for maximum traffic
  • Develop and oversee newsletter strategy and manage all newsletter products 
  • Collaborate with central data and product teams to develop the digital product roadmap optimising for WIRED audience growth
  • Work in close partnership with the affiliates lead to ensure the consistent high-ranking of key commerce articles, maximising revenue
  • Act as brand lead for video growth: increasing subscribers, views and minutes watched on YouTube

Essential skills and requirements

  • Brilliant written and verbal communication skills and attention to detail
  • Good knowledge of the WIRED brand (print, digital, social channels, video and events)
  • Mastery of newsletter ESPs, social media channels and platforms including Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Reddit etc
  • Proven experience using and acting on data collected from key analytics tools: Parse.ly, Google Analytics, Twitter Analytics, Facebook Insights, Shareablee, YouTube Analytics and others
  • Proven ability to "bring data to life" through visualisation software (Data Studio, Tableau, Excel, etc), dashboards or other means
  • Experience with paywalls and consumer funnel optimisation
  • An entrepreneurial spirit, strong work ethic, inquisitive approach to everything, and an insatiable desire to be a part of a growing and creative digital company
  • Ability to work in a team, with exposure to high-level stakeholders
  • Additional desirable skills include:
  • Experience with content management systems
  • Experience with keyword / social intelligence, and rank-monitoring tools such as Hitwise, Pi, Newswhip, and Crowdtangle or their equivalents (Moz, ahrefs, SEMrush etc)
  • Demonstrable knowledge of the tech industry a bonus, but not essential
