An experienced and extremely organised business journalist, the category reports deputy editor has strong writing skills, a good head for figures and the smarts to analyse retailing and marketing strategy in detail and communicate it compellingly in print and online, whether through detailed reports, or short and punchy op-ed pieces.

The Grocer’s category reports stand and fall with the quality and accuracy of the category data they contain. The category reports deputy editor therefore has to be highly numerate, comfortable with Excel and have a real appetite for data journalism and for telling data-driven stories.

The category reports deputy editor also takes primary responsibility for delivering category reports and digital features to web, optimising them for SEO, reader impact and engagement, and promoting them on The Grocer’s social media channels.

Commissioning and editing skills are an advantage, but not essential at this stage.

Key responsibilities:

  • Write engaging, data-driven category reports to deadline and house style

  • Keep clippings files on each category report area to support commissioning and category research

  • Verify and sense-check category data, working in partnership with data providers

  • Use data journalism skills and tools to identify news stories and angles from category data

  • Identify and write news stories arising from category reports

  • Write copy for digital features

  • Upload category reports to web once published and ensure they are presented in line with Grocer house style

  • Upload digital features to web and ensure they are optimised for SEO, user engagement and readability

  • Promote category reports and digital features on The Grocer’s social media channels

  • Support the category reports editor in delivering major annual projects and special supplements

  • Deputise for the category reports editor

Desired skills/development potential:

  • Compile detailed category report briefs for freelance and in-house writers, and ensure these are delivered on time

  • Support the category reports editor in editing copy, checking for accuracy, copy flow and style

  • Commission digital features and provide art direction for them

  • Identify suitable images, lead angles and headlines for category reports to maximise reader engagement and traffic
